HAPPY NEW YEAR?
Late January may seem a little tardy to wish happy New Year to anyone but dates have always been flexible. It has only been since 1752 that New Year 's Day has been on 1st January. Before that it was on March 25th and before that it was on December 25th. Then again, this only applies in the Common Era, (typically referred to as the Christian year and referenced as AD. There are other years however, such as the Jewish and Chinese years. It could seem that any time of year is a good time to wish someone a "Happy New Year".
This is typical of the problems and situations that are presented to Quality Managers. What may superficially appear to be wrong, mistimed or inappropriate can, upon reflection, be shown to be OK in the right context. This may a semantic observation or an exercise in pedantry but it isn't:
The quality profession is driven to get things right and to achieve customer satisfaction. It is highly unlikely that this is going to be achieved if the quality manager does not even know what time of year it is. The first rule of quality therefore, is to make sure that you are talking the same language as your customer
